Projects

Khaya Cheshire Care Centre

Khaya Cheshire Care Centre is an outreach programme initiated by the Port Elizabeth Cheshire Homes. It caters for severely mentally and physically disabled children ranging from the ages of three to 20. Most of these children have not been accommodated in mainstream or special education. They are all resident in Walmer Township.

SI Port Elizabeth adopted it as a project from the time of its opening in 2006. The club has supported the centre by sponsoring furnishings, furniture, appliances and a wheelchair for one of the boys. Some of the children are incontinent and the club funds the purchase of disposable nappies. The children are also treated to Christmas presents.

A little boy who has club feet has been admitted to Merryvale special school. His education costs have been sponsored through our friendship link with SI Birkenhead.

Khayalethu Youth Centre

The Khayalethu Youth Centre supports former street children. Our club donates fruit and vegetables on a monthly basis and other items as needs arise. Members from SI Birkenhead visited Khayalethu and donated money, stationery and sports clothes. Older boys who have left school stay at a halfway house, Khayalethu Oliver House. They are either in apprenticeships or are studying further.

House of Resurrection Haven (HIV/Aids haven)

Our club maintains monthly contact with the haven. The House of Resurrection came under threat of closure and/or down-sizing in 2006, due to the withdrawal of government funding. The Port Elizabeth community has rallied around this valuable facility and it is still thriving. We are proud to be one of the staunch local supporters of this Aids haven.

Through our friendship link with SI Birkenhead, SI Northwich collaborated with us to have clothing and toy cupboards made. Another Friendship Link, SI Bradford, donated money to have individual bed screens installed, for increased patient privacy. A member of the same club has also raised funds for nappies for the haven's babies and adults. Plaques have been put up to acknowledge these donations.

SI Birkenhead, upon hearing about the need for a private Aids diagnostic and counselling clinic within the grounds of the haven, initiated a plan to raise funds for this clinic assisted by our club.

Mother of Hope, Yokhuselo Haven and Lana's Lodge

Mother of Hope is a refuge for abused women. Women arrive or are brought by the police or welfare to the Mother of Hope house, which is open 24 hours a day. They stay overnight and then may move to Yokhuselo Haven, a safe house, for treatment and counselling. The next step is to move on to Lana's Lodge where training in computer literacy, sewing and other skills are provided. Once a trainee is successful in finding a job, she may stay on at Lana's for a maximum of three months.

Lindsay Ziehl, the supervisor, is also the director of Reality, a training programme mostly but not solely, for women. SI Birkenhead supported this programme by donating computer paper and ordering items made by the trainees.

The club assists the home by donating clothing, toiletries and materials for sewing classes.

Linda's Little Angels

This is a day care facility for local toddlers and children of nursery school age started by Linda Dube. The majority of the parents do not contribute financially to this excellently-run day care.

Our club makes a monthly donation towards Linda's food costs and has supplied her with linoleum for the floors. Our club has also given her educational toys and games as well as parties at Easter and Christmas for the children.

Proposed New Prison Project

SI Port Elizabeth has commenced participation in the 'buddy' system at the North End Prison for women, to support and assist the women prisoners.
