Projects

Thembisa Embo Community Project

We have been supporting this project for more than seven years. Through donations of clothing, some of which are sold for an income, we support the caregivers of the Embo orphans. A 'Legacy of Love Village' has been established and we are working towards building an ablution block as well. The village will be used as an emergency and crisis centre for those caregivers who are sick and/or families who have terminally ill members needing medical attention and care. It will also be used as a rehabilitation and emergency centre for youth from the Stanger and Mpumalanga Welfare Society.

We are grateful for the financial support from our friendship links in Sutton Coldfield, UK, and Kyoto-Aoi in Japan.

With the help from our German friendship link, we've been able to pay the school fees of 45 learners from schools in the Embo region.

Vegetable garden

Our vegetable garden at the Tongaat School for Special Needs continues to thrive. A partnership with the Rotary Club made it possible to install a 5 000 l tank to collect rain water for watering the garden.

Adult education

The ABET, Adult Literacy Programme at Reservoir Hills Secondary School, continues to grow. Basic English and Maths is taught and the final level of education for these adult learners is grade 7. Classes are held from Monday to Thursday 17h00 to 19h30.

"If I ruled the World"

In this once off campaign aimed at promoting international Goodwill and Understanding, Hannah Lurie, past Club President and National Past President of SISA as well as a famous South African sculptor, collected expressions from prominent South African women starting with the quote "If I ruled the World".

The participants were: Margaret Lenta, Emeritus Professor and Senior Research Associate at the University of KwaZulu-Natal; Helen Suzman, politician; Professor Elizabeth Oehrle, Senior Research Associate Professor from the School of Music, University of KwaZulu-Natal; Professor Devi Moodley Rajab, psychologist, prize winning journalist and author; Hilary Semple, retired academic, lecturer of English and Poetry, Witwatersrand University of Johannesburg and Hannah Lurie, famous sculptor and Past SISA President and club member.

Diverse projects

Other projects include fun walks, notably in support of the international quardrennial project: Women survivors of war; social fundraisers celebrating Women's Day and other commemorative days, such as Literacy Day; and visits to old age homes - with entertainment and refreshments to boot!
